The SHRAM Bulletin this month focusses on the health issues that migrant workers face at the destination locations, especially at the work place. Migrant workers are usually employed in locations with poor workplace security and welfare. They usually end up working for longer hours and lack basic health facilities. Policies and provisions that must ensure that they at least get basic health facilities are, at best, weak. The SHRAM Reports section this month features a study done by our partner Prayas Centre for Labour Research and Action (PCLRA) on Safety and Health of Labourers in Cotton Ginning Industries in Gujarat. Another study featured here is by Aajeevika Bureau on Child Labour in Cottonseed Production. Also this month International Labour Day, was observed by our SHRAM Partners with a variety of awareness drives, lectures and campaigns.

1. Safety and Health of Labourers in Cotton Ginning Industries in Gujarat
PRAYAS
This brief status paper has been prepared on the basis of accumulated experience of working for the welfare of Ginning workers since 2006 season in Kadi area of Gujarat and a study of accidents wherein researchers traced the cases of accidents in both the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. In all 105 cases have been identified by the researchers so far, though all of them have not been approached in person and interviewed.

2. Child Labour in Cottonseed Production
PCLRA
The Field Study was undertaken by Dakshini Rajasthan Majdoor Union to understand the use of child labour in cottonseed production in north Gujarat in the year 2007. The Union has been organising the seasonal migrant tribal workers that go to work on Bt cottonseed farms from South Rajasthan to North Gujarat during the rainy season for two three months. It has come across very high incidence of child labour amongst these workers.

1. Migrants to Urban India: Need for Public Health Action

Migration to urban areas not only affects the health of adults, but also the health of children in an adverse manner. This fact is evident from the relation between migration and child mortality, and this has been shown in a study which has used data from the National Family Health Survey-3. Undernutrition and low immunization coverage is also responsible for child mortality.

This background paper to the 2015 World Migration Report, commissioned by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) from the Research Unit of the Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration, seeks to determine the impact of migration and mobility on the health of migrants and host populations in urban settings. In addition, it aims at identifying the main policy related issues of health and urban migration, as well as providing key policy recommendations for local governments.

1. SAMPARK Celebrates International Labour Day
SAMPARK
As an initial step of involving collectives of Shramik Mithras, members of collectives, the WRC team and other workers from several labour colonies organised Labour Day Celebrations on 1st May, 2016 at Play Ground Next to Freedom International School, 11th Cross, 17th Main, HSR Layout, Sector-4, Bengaluru -560102 at 10.00 am at Play Ground. About 210 construction workers from across 18 sites and 30 children belonging to 6 creches crèches attended the event.

2. PEPUS Celebrates International Labour Day
PEPUS
International Labour Day was organised by PEPUS on May 1st 2016 at village Tikra of Kaudihar block, Dist. Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. The programme was well attended by migrant labourers and their family members. The programme was attended by Mr.Jagdish Singh, President ,Nirmaan Shramik Suraksha Sangh (NSSS), Sanjay Tiwari, Pradhan ,Bijlipur, Ram Kailash , Clerk, Labour Department, Mr. Siyaram, Zila Panchayat Member ,Mr. Hariram , Director PEPUS, Mrs. Kamla ,Project Director among others.
